In the jewelry of the Baroque age, the focus was on gemstones rather than settings, and in particular on diamonds. The gems were arranged in simple, geometric clusters in settings that were oval, square or oblong. New types of enamels were applied to such items as accessories, crucifixes, watches, and the interior of cases for miniatures, with a varied palette depicting themes from religion, botany, landscapes and mythology. In this period the demand for mounted portraits in cameo and seals inscribed with family crests was high; the tradition of jewelry engraving was kept vigorously alive.
