<Description>
Gold, silver, ruby and diamond tiara, the openwork bandeau filled with leaves and flower buds centred on a 12 pointed star between diamond borders, surmounted by nine more, a larger in the centre with four others on each side, with rubies and diamonds between them. Mid 19th century.
<Commentary>
The star, so well suited to the display of diamonds became one of the most popular motifs in jewellery during the second half of the l9th century. Here the diamonds have the additional role of showing off the dark pink colour of the rubies which are set in the centre of each star as well as in six of the twelve points. This design combines the flowers and leaves of Romantic period jewellery with the new fashion for stars. It would have been worn with feathers on the head for important ceremonies and formal social events. The huge popularity of this motif owes much to the Empress Elizabeth of Austria who was painted in 1865 by F.X.Winterhalter with diamond stars blazing from her magnificent chestnut brown hair and more stars on her white satin and tulle dress.
